Technical Paper: "Measurement of
Antenna Performance for Active Array Antennas with Spherical
Near-Field Scanning."
Dr.
Doren Hess, Senior Staff Engineer at MI Technologies, recently
presented a paper at a meeting of the Institution of Engineering and
Technology in the United Kingdom on the use of spherical near-field
scanning for measurement of active array antennas. In the paper, Dr.
Hess addresses some of the issues faced by antenna engineers when
testing active antennas including a review of features of phased
arrays and a discussion of measuring the effective isotropic
radiated power (EIRP) and antenna patterns by use of the spherical
near-field scanning technique. Featured in the paper is an example
of the test methodology of the SAMPSON radar antenna.

Near-Field Measurement Essentials
MI
Technologies' MI-6970 Waveguide Probes are used to sample the
radiated electromagnetic field of an antenna under test. The
rectangular, open-ended waveguide design of the MI-6970 family of
probes features tapered ends to minimize diffraction effects.
MI-6970 Waveguide Probes are
available in 30 different configurations for frequency ranges from
0.49-0.75 to 75.0-110 GHz.

Technical Ability Wins Positioner and
Antenna Test Business
MI Technologies has won a number of
contracts to supply precision positioning equipment and antenna test
facilities for commercial and defense-related customers.
Among
the recent awards are contracts to:
- Build and install a large
Spherical Near-Field system for on-vehicle antenna tests using
MI Technologies' MI-6980 Spherical Near-Field Arch, turntable
and MI-2097 Automated Microwave Measurement System.
- Create and install a turnkey
upgrade to an existing outdoor antenna test range for antenna,
RCS and radome testing
- Design and build a
state-of-the-art, 3,500 square
foot antenna measurement laboratory for
test and measurement of wireless antenna products
- Design and build a new RCS pylon
rotator with increased mechanical capacity for RCS testing to
handle test bodies up to 28,000 lbs.
"Technical
ability and paying close attention to customer requirements are
contributing to our growing business," said Jeff Fordham, vice
president of Marketing for MI Technologies. "Price is always an
important consideration for any customer, but MI Technologies'
50-year record of performance and our solutions-oriented approach to
customer requirements are driving our recent wins."
